Surrey Schools at Queen Mary 2004

44 entries from 10 Schools and Affiliated groups attended Surrey Schools' third regatta of 2003/2004 at Queen Mary Sailing Club on Saturday May 8th (The second regatta, the March Papercourt meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather)

The early morning rain abated before the start of the first race and a moderate chilly north easterly wind force 2 -3 with occasional gusts gave the youngsters an enjoyable days sailing.

Race Officer, Paul Maxfield set a trapezoid course on the east side of the reservoir , with an estimated race time of 45 minutes being the target for each race. 4 races were started, but only 3 were completed due to drifting marks.

The main action in the slow fleet came from Alex Groves of Island Barn, gaining two 1st places and a 2nd. In The Fast Fleet, Chris Smith of Hampton School in a Laser and Henry and Sam Maxfield of RGS in a 420 had a close tussle in all 3 races, the 420 winning the first race by 2 seconds, but losing the next two races by four seconds and nine seconds respectively.

A Summary of the results will show what a difficult task the race officer and his team had recording the various times, handicaps, laps completed, and coping with boats with no sail numbers!.

Surrey Schools Commodore, Andy Kittow thanked the Race officer and his team, the Safety boat crews and all the hard working parents for making the event a success, and to hosts Queen Mary Sailing Club for their hospitality.
