Surrey Schools at Littleton 2003

With the new academic year well under way, Surrey Schools held their first regatta at Littleton Sailing Club on Saturday October 11th.

The warm sunny weather was enjoyed by the spectators but the lack of wind meant a frustrating day on the water. Only two races were sailed and from these the handicap and class events were decided.

All credit to the youngsters for putting on a display of light air sailing in boats ranging from Oppies to 470’s.

The 33 entries included 12 Toppers, many of them South-East zone squad sailors. Sam Eversfield of Island Barn beat Edmund Van der Klug (Royal Grammar School) in the second Slow Fleet handicap, a close finish saw Nick Arnold (RGS) get up to beat Van der Klug with Eversfield 3rd, who won the event on count back.

In the Enterprise class, 5 boats entered and Alex Stypulkowski and Ian Sherriffs of Therfield won this event and the fast fleet handicap comfortably.

The Laser Radial Class had only 3 entries and the consistent Tom Buffham of RGS crossed the finish line with 8 minutes to spare.

The Junior fleet and Optimist class was won with ease by local sailor Laura Glover sailing for Wey Activities Group.

Surrey Schools Vice President John Jones presented the awards and congratulated the youngsters on the competitive sailing in the fickle wind conditions. Stressing that without them we would have no regatta, the volunteer safety boat crews, race officers and helpers were thanked by SSSA commodore Andy Kittow.
