Surrey Schools at Island Barn 2002

36 boats from Surrey Schools and affiliated groups entered their annual regatta at Island Barn S.C. on May 11th. A full days sailing was enjoyed in moderate, mostly northerly winds and overcast skies.

An oval course was set, taking in most of the lake.  The second of the 3 Fast Fleet handicap races saw the closest contest, the 420 of Maxfield and Roome getting up to beat Beacom Laser by 7 seconds with the Enterprise of Pateman and Davies 3rd.

In the Slow Fleet, the Topaz sailed by Buffham won the first two races comfortably. Local sailor M. Philips won the 3rd race easily, Van der Klugt (RGS) coming second in the 2nd and 3rd races, Emma Smith (Island Barn) had a second and third, Greenaway (Island Barn) and Piers Parfitt (WAG), sailing his first regatta, taking the other third places.

Class races for Laser, Enterprise, Topper and Scratch bought deserved applause from the watching parents for the single lap event. The closest finish was in the Scratch event, the 420 of Maxfield/Roome just doing enough to beat the Merlin-Rocket of Fuller and Langford (Heathside School). Seventeen Toppers were together to the outer mark where van der Klugt broke away to finish first in front of Martin of Queen Mary SC Juniors with Greenaway 3rd.

SSSA Commodore Vincent Francois thanked Island Barn Sailing Club for there co-operation and hospitality.
