Tidal Championship at Hayling Island – 2002

As the Hayling Regatta was abandoned due to the foul weather conditions, only the annual awards were presented, details here.

An additional award was presented - which was a one off, ‘Ellen MacArthur Award’. A signed photograph of Ellen on her boat Kingfisher. This was donated by Offshore Challenges, my request for Ellen to present the awards at Hayling could not be fulfilled as she was due to be out in the Atlantic! History

A ‘Jim C’ has e-mailed a comment on the SSSA History. He was at RGS in the early seventies.

‘The RGS Sailing Club was pretty much the junior section of Papercourt Sailing club, hence the domination of SSSA results in those days, since the best RGS sailors were sailing competitively in Papercourt class and open meetings. He comments on the 11+ dinghy and says that in its last days as an organised class it was a far nicer boat than the Gull or Mirror, much more a racing boat with side decks. With second hand boats available cheaply it was the teenager's choice at Papercourt.’

He remembers that RGS had an ‘iffy’ Lark, a dubious GP14 and a Heron or two, but most of the sailing was done in Papercourt Members' own boats, and that the RGS Society was a fairly informal bunch that today's rules and regulations would not allow.

He also mentions that in the early days they used to hold a Sailing Club camp the week before the SSSA Hayling Regatta.

Can I hear the saying, ‘Ah for the good old days!’? (Ed)

Littleton Regatta - 2002

Autumn finally arrived on October 12th at the Surrey Schools Littleton regatta - overcast skies and steady rain greeted the 41 boats from Surrey Schools and Affiliated groups. With the rigging, briefing and safety boat preparation completed, racing started at 11.00 am. The rain stopped, a force 2-3 easterly breeze with flat calm to strong gusts around the clubhouse area, continued throughout the day.

A combined slow and fast fleet handicap race, a class race and a scratch race made up the mornings events, 27 boats competed in the slow fleet, and 14 in the fast fleet. With the lead changing around the course, the leading boats received much applause from the spectators on the club balcony.

After lunch at the new Waterside Café, the competitors completed two more handicap races.

Andrew Beacom - Royal Grammar School - won the Laser class and the Fast Fleet handicap, Laura Glover - Wey Activities Group - won the scratch race in her Optimist. The Topper class and slow fleet handicap was won by Sam Eversfield of Island Barn and James Pateman and Gareth Davies won the Enterprise class.
